For my audio project, I like the inspiration of "The Sound of Silence," with respect to John Cage's focus on the unexpected beauty in everyday sounds. My piece, will explore the subtle, often unnoticed, auditory experiences in different environments, blending natural with urban soundscapes. I like the theme of a contrast between chaos and calm, with a clear structure that transitions from an intense beginning to a calmer middle, with a mix of both in the end. I’d like to begin with a sense of tension or busyness, incorporating city noise like honking cars, the hum of machinery, or the bustling energy of people moving through crowded spaces. For the middle section, I’ll transition to softer, more ambient sounds such as flowing water, wind blowing through trees, distant bird calls, or the hum of traffic to bring a sense of tranquility and calmness. To avoid repetition, I’ll play with effects like reverb, echo, and panning, allowing the sounds to evolve and shift throughout the piece. As the piece progresses, I plan to introduce more layered and distinct clips, such as footsteps on pavement, the creaking of doors, snippets of conversations, and even the rhythmic patter of rain. I’d like the end of the piece to be a harmonious combination of both chaos and calming, where each sound compliments each other. I want to create a reflection inspired by my life of moving from New York City to Colorado. I want the finale of the piece to combine both elements, contributing to the idea that each is beautiful in their own way but with balance, they create something beautifully harmonious.
